Merlin, a leading U.S.-based developer of cost-effective, takeoff-to-touchdown autonomy for both legacy and next-generation airborne systems, led by Matthew George and the team, has added an Aero L-39C Albatros to its test fleet, the company’s first jet.

Merlin has added its first jet, the Aero L-39C Albatros, to its test fleet. The aircraft will serve as a dedicated testbed to advance Merlin Pilot’s aircraft-agnostic autonomy capabilities for tactical aircraft and dynamic military missions.

The L-39 will complement Merlin’s three active Merlin Pilot integration programs: the Cessna 208 Caravan for utility missions, the Beechcraft King Air for long-endurance ISR and maritime operations, and the Lockheed C-130J for tactical airlift.

Together, these platforms will support the development of Merlin’s aircraft-agnostic autonomy system across a growing range of airframes and mission profiles.

What a Jet Adds.

Merlin selected the L-39 for its rugged design, forgiving flight characteristics, and widespread use as a military jet trainer. The relatively affordable airframe provides a practical platform for developing autonomous capabilities in high-performance jet environments and exploring tactical missions involving multiple aircraft.

Higher speeds, increased wing loading, and a wider operating envelope introduce new challenges for flight control and decision-making. Testing on the L-39 will help advance Merlin Pilot’s mission autonomy, multi-aircraft coordination, and flight envelope protection capabilities for tactical military operations.

“Adding the L-39 to our fleet represents the next logical step in Merlin’s autonomy roadmap,” said Matt George, co-founder and CEO of Merlin. “To build a pilot that can fly anything, you need to train it on everything. The L-39 brings a jet into our representative mix of aircraft, giving us another platform to develop a more versatile autonomy core. We designed Merlin Pilot from day one as autonomy for any aircraft, and each platform we integrate on helps us to further mature the system for the missions our commercial and defense customers fly every day.”
