Cognition Announces its Series E Funding

Cognition, developer of the first autonomous software engineer, led by Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, has raised over $2B at a $48B valuation. The round was led by new investors Andreessen Horowitz and Accel, alongside existing investors Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir. Other investors in the round include Benchmark, Bessemer, Kleiner Perkins, Greylock, Lightspeed, Altimeter, Bond Capital, Meritech, Atreides, Valor, T. Rowe Price, Lux, 8VC, D1, 137 Ventures, DST, Positive Sum, HOF, Soma, BoxGroup, Battery, Ribbit, Swish, Stripes, Definition, Hanabi, Journey, Bain Capital Ventures, Layer Global, A* Capital, Alpha Wave, Alkeon, and Diffusion.

Software underpins nearly every aspect of modern life, but demand far exceeds the world’s capacity to build it. Even well-resourced engineering teams leave products unfinished, delay critical upgrades, and struggle to address vulnerabilities because engineering time is limited.

Founded in 2024, Cognition aims to expand that capacity by shifting engineers toward higher-level architecture while AI agents handle more of the execution. The company’s vision is to combine engineers with swarms of Devin agents to accelerate software development and tackle increasingly complex problems.

Since its last funding round in May, Cognition’s run-rate revenue has grown from $492 million to nearly $900 million. As Devin becomes more embedded in software development, customers across industries are expanding adoption, with deployments spanning NVIDIA, GE Aerospace, Citi, Mercedes-Benz, and Modal.

Devin is becoming more proactive across software workflows. Devin Auto-Triage can investigate incidents, Devin Security Swarm identifies and triages vulnerabilities, and Devin Automations can trigger work from events in Slack, GitHub, Linear, and other systems without requiring a separate chat prompt.

Cognition sees this as the beginning of a self-driving software era, where agents proactively improve software and intelligently allocate compute toward high-impact tasks. Human engineers would increasingly act as architects, setting goals and priorities while agents handle more execution.

Cognition is expanding its global presence to work closely with customers, with offices now in Washington, D.C., Tokyo, Singapore, London, São Paulo, and Madrid alongside hubs in San Francisco, New York, and Austin.

The company is also building Cognition as an independent agent lab, allowing it to combine the models best suited to specific tasks, including its own, without tying customers to a single model provider.
