Wordsmith, an AI for in-house legal teams led by Ross McNairn, Robbie Falkenthal, and Volodymyr Giginiak, has announced a $14 million extension to their Series B, led by new investment from Intact Private Capital alongside existing investors Highland Europe and Index Ventures. FT Ventures has also become a shareholder in Wordsmith.

The additional investment follows a period of rapid growth for Wordsmith, with revenue increasing 14x year over year and the platform now used by more than 500 companies, including BT, FT, Sage, Starling, Canva and Safelite. The funding will expand Wordsmith’s presence in North America, where demand from enterprise legal teams is accelerating, while strengthening its position in financial services and insurance.

Unlike legal AI startups serving both law firms and corporate legal departments, Wordsmith is built exclusively for in-house legal teams. The company’s approach reflects the distinct needs of corporate legal departments, which focus on resolving more matters internally, controlling outside counsel costs, and providing faster support across the business, rather than operating around billable hours.

Justin Smith-Lorenzetti, Managing Director at Intact Private Capital, said the investment supports Wordsmith at a key stage of growth. He noted that in-house legal teams at financial services and insurance companies require legal infrastructure capable of operating at enterprise scale while maintaining the control and auditability needed in highly regulated environments. Wordsmith is designed to address these requirements, combining an understanding of enterprise workflows with infrastructure built for regulated industries.

Wordsmith is now used by enterprises with more than 10,000 employees, with customers reporting seven-figure savings in outside counsel spend within weeks of adoption. Teams that previously spent 70–80% of their time on routine work are redirecting that capacity to higher-value matters, while regulatory and multi-jurisdictional questions are increasingly handled in-house before external counsel is engaged.

Alexandra Calinikos, Chief Investment Officer at FT Ventures, said Wordsmith’s solutions are reshaping how in-house legal teams operate and collaborate with commercial functions. The Financial Times’ in-house legal team uses Wordsmith as its enterprise legal AI platform, providing faster access to legal support across the business. FT Ventures is also supporting Wordsmith’s next phase of growth as the company develops infrastructure designed to make legal work more efficient for businesses globally.

Ross McNairn, CEO and co-founder of Wordsmith, said spending on outside counsel often reflects the lack of infrastructure needed to handle legal work internally. Wordsmith provides that infrastructure through AI agents that handle routine requests, with lawyers reviewing matters that require judgment and each step recorded for accountability. The approach enables legal teams to retain more work in-house, reduce external counsel costs, and demonstrate their impact across the business.
