Sophia Space Pairs with Apex for Orbital Computing Demo, Announces $22 Million in Total Funding

Sophia Space, building orbital compute and data centers, led by Rob DeMillo, Dr. Leon Alkalai, Brian Monnin, and Jim Chase, announced a strategic collaboration with satellite bus manufacturer Apex, while finalizing the closing of a $7 million financing round, bringing its total funding to $22 million, in a pair of moves designed to carry orbital edge computing from concept to operational reality. The round was led by EverGreen, the NVIDIA Alumni Investment Network, alongside SparkLabs Group and other strategic investors.
The agreement includes a 2027 demonstration mission that will deploy Sophia Space’s TILE compute modules aboard an Apex Nova satellite. The goal is to validate real-time, in-orbit data processing, enabling enterprise, government, and defense customers to analyze data directly in space rather than relying on ground-based infrastructure.
The timing aligns with a rapid increase in data generated by new satellite constellations. As Earth observation, communications, defense, and scientific missions scale, traditional ground-based processing is becoming a bottleneck. For applications where speed is critical, delays between data collection and analysis can significantly reduce operational value, creating growing demand for real-time processing in orbit.
The broader vision extends beyond faster data processing to enabling satellites to make intelligent decisions autonomously in orbit. Such capabilities could unlock new applications across defense, commercial space, Earth observation, and other data-intensive industries.
The planned 2027 mission is supported by Apex’s proven spacecraft platform. By providing a reliable, standardized satellite bus, Apex enables companies like Sophia Space to focus on advancing their core technologies rather than developing the underlying spacecraft infrastructure from scratch.

Rather than developing spacecraft infrastructure in-house, the company can focus on advancing its core orbital computing technology and bringing it to orbit more quickly.
Designed for AI acceleration, edge computing, and real-time data processing in low Earth orbit, TILE modules aim to transform satellites from data collection systems into autonomous computing platforms capable of analyzing and acting on information as soon as it is generated.
