Shield Space, a UK defence technology company focused on developing space control and counterspace capabilities for allied defence customers, led by Graeme Ritchie, Dr Daniel Molland, and others, has announced the close of its $2.7m pre-seed round, marking the company’s first institutional backing to deliver autonomous Space Control capability for NATO and its allies. The round was led by Mercia Ventures and Twin Path Ventures, with participation from ROI Ventures, P3A Ventures, Ventures Together, and Halceon.

Shield Space was founded by former operators with direct experience of how space advantage is lost in modern conflicts. The company believes space superiority will be achieved through distributed, attritable, and autonomous systems rather than a small number of vulnerable, centrally controlled platforms, mirroring lessons from Ukraine, where decentralised capabilities have proven decisive in denying adversary freedom of manoeuvre.

Shield Space is developing autonomous space control and counterspace systems to help allied forces detect, decide, and act in orbit, to rapidly deploy credible, operationally realistic deterrence capabilities. Investor backing underscores confidence in the company’s soldier–scientist approach and supports the translation of operational experience into systems that strengthen the UK’s space posture and provide NATO with a strategic advantage.
