Reservoir Raises $8M to Expand Predictive Water Heating Beyond Boston

Reservoir, the world's first predictive water heater, has raised an $8 million seed round, led by Asymmetric Capital Partners, and joined by Founder Collective, which led the pre-seed round in 2024, and MCJ.

Reservoir is focused on making home electrification easier and more affordable, starting with residential hot water.

The company has installed its smart, high-efficiency water heaters in nearly 100 homes across the Boston area and plans to expand into additional homes and cities.

The Problem with the Water Heater in Your Basement.

Water heating is the second-largest source of energy use in the average home, with a typical water heater consuming more annual energy than an electric car.

Water heaters are also a major source of home damage, with 24% of home insurance claims linked to water, including failures, frozen pipes, and unnoticed leaks.

Reservoir’s predictive water heater addresses both problems by anticipating hot water demand to reduce wasted energy while monitoring for conditions that can lead to leaks, frozen pipes, fumes, and bacteria growth.

Traction So Far.

Nearly 100 Homes.

Reservoir began installations in late 2025 and has since deployed nearly 100 units across the Boston metro area, heating 500,000 gallons of water since January.

Fully Installed for Under $4,000.

Reservoir offers a fully installed water heater for under $4,000 by designing, building, and installing its own units. Upfront costs are comparable to traditional systems, while rebates and 0% financing can further reduce costs. The system can also lower annual energy bills by up to $800 compared with a traditional tank.

Expand Predictive Water Heating.

The funding will support expansion across the Boston metro area and into new cities. A growing installation base will also provide more data across homes, climates, and usage patterns, helping improve Reservoir’s predictive technology.

Address the Plumbing Labor Shortage.

Reservoir is also working to strengthen the plumbing workforce by training apprentices on smart hardware and software while providing hands-on installation experience earlier in their careers.

Help Balance the Electric Grid.

With roughly 120 million water heaters in U.S. homes, residential hot water represents a potential grid-connected thermal battery. Reservoir can heat water when electricity is cheapest or renewable generation is highest, storing that energy as hot water for later use and helping utilities reduce renewable energy curtailment.
