Pionix, making EV charging reliable, interoperable, and future-ready for everyone, led by Dr. Marco Möller, Johanna Claussen, Cornelius Claussen, Markus Juhr-De Benedetti, and Tim Valbert, has raised over €8 million led by Ascend Capital Partners, with participation from Start-up BW Seed Fonds, managed by MBG Baden-Württemberg, Pale blue dot, Vireo Ventures, Axeleo Ventures, and further investors.

Despite major progress in e-mobility, EV charging remains fragmented due to proprietary systems that often fail to communicate, leading to reliability issues and error rates of up to 25%.

Founded in 2021, Pionix provides a shared software foundation that improves reliability and interoperability across charging infrastructure. The company also led the development of EVerest, an open-source platform that gives manufacturers, operators, automakers, and fleets a common base to eliminate compatibility issues and accelerate innovation.

EVerest has become one of cleantech’s most influential open-source initiatives, supported by 600 contributors from over 70 organisations and now powering hundreds of thousands of chargers worldwide.

Donated by Pionix to Linux Foundation Energy in 2021, the software has an estimated ecosystem value exceeding $500 million, already approaching half the estimated $1.2 billion value of the Linux kernel, one of the world’s most recognised open-source projects.

Pionix will use the €8 million investment to advance its open, modular software and hardware products. Pionix Cloud provides a dedicated backend for EVerest-based chargers, while ChargeBridge offers a pre-certified, plug-and-play hardware module that simplifies integration and speeds up deployment of reliable, interoperable chargers.

The company will also accelerate the growth of the EVerest ecosystem, collaborating with its global community on upcoming initiatives that will shape the future of EV charging.

Marco Möller, Founder and CEO of Pionix, underscored the need for reliable, interoperable charging and noted that open-source solutions like EVerest, supported by Pionix Cloud and ChargeBridge, simplify the creation and operation of consistently performing chargers.

Jerry Hong of Ascend Capital Partners described Pionix as building the software foundation for global EV charging and highlighted its strong position through leadership of the EVerest initiative.

Joel Larsson of Pale Blue Dot compared Pionix’s role to Android’s impact on smartphones, defining the open platform layer set to unify EV charging infrastructure worldwide.

Andreas Stadie of MBG Baden-Württemberg noted the region’s long-standing automotive innovation and highlighted Pionix as part of its continued evolution in EV charging.

Felix Krause of Vireo Ventures described Pionix as an impact-driven company, citing its inclusion in the Norrsken Impact/100 list, and reaffirmed support for its continued growth.
