Outlier Space Raises US$7.35 M to Build Commercial Microgravity Return Platform

Outlier Space, making microgravity accessible, scalable, and reliable, led by Jamie France, Nick Pearson, and Alex Linossier, has raised a $7M pre-seed fundraise to develop a commercial microgravity payload capsule, led by GD1 (Global from Day One), with participation from Nova Threshold, Brian CartmellAirtreeIcehouse Ventures, Investible, and Side Stage Ventures.


One of the largest pre-seed funding rounds in New Zealand's history, the investment underscores the country's growing position as a global hub for advanced engineering and aerospace innovation.


Outlier Space is developing an autonomous satellite capsule capable of carrying research and manufacturing payloads into orbit for extended periods before returning them safely to Earth. The platform aims to deliver reliable, scalable, and repeatable access to microgravity, enabling pharmaceutical, biotechnology, advanced materials, and scientific organizations to conduct research and manufacturing beyond Earth's atmosphere.


The capital will support the development of Outlier Space's first reusable satellite capsules, designed to launch aboard commercially available rockets. Development and qualification of the company's inaugural spacecraft are currently underway, with an initial test flight targeted for 2028, subject to engineering progress, regulatory approvals, and funding milestones.


Investor Confidence and Market Timing.


The funding reflects growing investor confidence in New Zealand's aerospace industry and will enable Outlier Space to expand its engineering capabilities as development of its commercial microgravity platform advances.


Founded by former Rocket Lab executive Jamie France, the company is drawing on expertise in orbital launch systems, satellite platforms, and lunar missions to develop reusable spacecraft for in-space research and manufacturing. According to the company, the investment will support recruitment and accelerate progress toward commercial deployment.


Lead investor GD1 cited France's operational track record at Rocket Lab, the experience of the engineering team, and favorable industry dynamics as key factors behind the investment. The firm also highlighted the approaching retirement of the International Space Station and the rapid evolution of the commercial launch market as catalysts for privately operated microgravity infrastructure.


The broader market is also benefiting from historically low launch costs and increasing demand for commercial access to microgravity. As the International Space Station approaches the end of its operational life, commercial platforms are expected to play a larger role in supporting scientific research and advanced manufacturing in orbit.


Enabling Microgravity Research and Manufacturing.


Outlier Space is developing reusable satellite capsules designed to provide researchers and manufacturers with extended access to microgravity, an environment where reduced gravitational forces enable materials and biological processes to behave differently than on Earth. The technology is expected to support applications ranging from drug discovery and cancer research to advanced semiconductor development and engineered tissue models.


According to the company, microgravity can improve crystal formation, protein structure development, and the production of advanced materials by eliminating many of the gravitational effects that influence manufacturing on Earth.


The platform is designed to transport customer payloads into orbit, where research or manufacturing can be conducted over extended periods before the materials are returned safely to Earth for analysis or commercial use. Rather than developing the manufacturing equipment itself, Outlier Space is focused on providing the orbital infrastructure required to support these processes.


The company was founded by Jamie France, whose career spans high-performance engineering, aviation, and aerospace. Previous roles include leadership positions at Emirates Team New Zealand, Altitude Aerospace, and Rocket Lab, where he contributed to vehicle design, manufacturing systems, and launch operations.


Outlier Space is also expanding its engineering team, drawing talent from New Zealand and Australia's aerospace, aviation, and high-performance engineering sectors as development of its reusable spacecraft continues.
