Chromie Health, one of the world’s fastest-growing AI-powered scheduling and management platform for hospital operations, led by Douglas Ford, Scott Tisoskey, and the team, has announced a $2 million pre-seed round led by AIX Ventures along with the launch of Chromie Dispatch, the company’s flagship AI agent that instantly fills internal shift gaps via simple SMS.

The funding follows strong demand, with 750 hospitals on the waitlist, and will support the development of a suite of intelligent agents to streamline workflows and improve workforce management.

Hospital’s Problem: Nurse Shortages and Burnout Costing Billions

U.S. hospitals face frequent last-minute nursing gaps, often forcing manual coordination through calls, texts, and spreadsheets. This reactive system contributes to burnout, staffing inefficiencies, and increased clinical risk.

Chronic nurse shortages and turnover are estimated to cost the healthcare system over $100B annually, with replacement costs per nurse around $88,000, underscoring the need for more efficient staffing solutions.

“Since deploying Chromie Dispatch, last-minute scheduling has become far more efficient, eliminating manual coordination and reducing reliance on costly agency staffing,” said Sarah Mitchell. “Staff feel more supported, and overtime costs have already dropped by 25%.”

Chromie’s Solution: AI Agents for Hospital Staffing

Chromie automates hospital staffing through its SMS-first AI agent, Chromie Dispatch. When shifts open, it texts qualified nurses who respond “YES” or “NO,” with an algorithm selecting the best fit or allowing manager oversight.

The system fills staffing gaps up to 60x faster than manual processes, reducing scheduling from hours to minutes and helping free clinical teams from administrative burden.

Nurse managers now have real-time visibility into shift gaps and coverage, including patterns in availability and reliability, enabling data-driven performance reviews and staffing decisions. Nurses can also use the same data to advocate for raises, promotions, and fair scheduling.

Chromie is also planning future agents for real-time gap prediction and float pool optimization.

“A single nine-hour ER wait nearly cost me my life,” said Douglas Ford. “The issue isn’t a lack of caregivers, but outdated staffing tools. Chromie was built to enable faster, more reliable staffing so clinical teams can focus on patient care.”

Chromie was founded in 2024 by experts across AI, healthcare leadership, and frontline nursing.

Its leadership includes Douglas Ford, who moved from quantum computing research into healthcare after a critical ICU experience; CTO Scott Tisoskey, with experience in hospital IT and medical research; and CMO Patricia Ford, a critical care nurse and clinical research leader.

Ford and Tisoskey are both Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees in healthcare.

“Chromie is building an AI-native agent layer to orchestrate communication, coordination, and workforce operations across hospitals,” said Krish Ramadurai. “By replacing fragmented legacy workflows with an SMS-native platform, Chromie could become foundational infrastructure for modern healthcare systems.”
