Helsing Unveils Contra Autonomous Air Defence Alongside Missile Interceptors AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush

Helsing, designing new types of AI-defined autonomous systems across all domains, led by Torsten Reil, Dr. Gundbert Scherf, and the team, unveiled Contra, an AI-controlled autonomous air defence system designed to protect countries from scaled drone and missile attacks. The company also introduced two advanced interceptor missiles, AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush, designed to outmatch and outrun even the fastest jet-powered drone and cruise missile threats.
Helsing Develops Contra, an AI-Powered Air Defence System.
Helsing is developing Contra, an AI-powered air defence system designed to detect and engage large numbers of drones and cruise missiles simultaneously. The system uses its Altra C2 platform to fuse sensor data into a unified air picture while keeping human operators in control of decisions and threat prioritisation.
Contra includes two missile interceptors: AD-1 Inferno, a jet-powered interceptor designed for loitering, swarming and repeated engagements, and AD-2 Ambush, a solid-rocket interceptor capable of reaching Mach 2.5 with a range exceeding 20 km. Both feature radar seekers, ground-based mid-course guidance and container-based launch systems.
Helsing plans to mass-produce the interceptors at its Resilience Factories at prices below those of existing missile interceptors. Contra is also designed to integrate third-party systems, including anti-drone lasers, guns and net-based interceptors, within days.
The system reflects Helsing’s approach of combining AI software with affordable, mass-producible hardware to deliver air defence at scale while maintaining meaningful human oversight.
Niklas Köhler, Co-Founder and President of Helsing, says: "Contra ends the air defence dilemma: slow fair-weather drones, or million-euro missiles fired at cheap, mass-produced targets. Our AI links existing sensors and effectors in real time and adds our interceptors, AD-1 and AD-2. With jet and rocket propulsion, a low-cost all-weather radar seeker, and two independent European supply chains, they deliver autonomous fire superiority up to ten kilometres high – affordable and at industrial scale."
