Discovered Materials has Announced its Launch with a $9M Seed Round

Discovered Materials, building AI agents that discover new materials for semiconductor chips, led by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, has raised a $9M seed round led by Lightspeed, with participation from Y Combinator and Peak XV, and angels like Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar.
Intelligence Has a Heat Problem.
AI chips face a growing thermal challenge. Modern GPUs can generate heat fluxes of around 140 W/cm², exceeding the heat experienced by a space shuttle nose cone during atmospheric re-entry. As chip performance increases, so does the heat they produce, driving significant power and water consumption in data centers for cooling.
The heat generated by a chip, and how efficiently it can dissipate that heat, depends heavily on the materials used. Existing materials are approaching their limits, while new materials could significantly improve chip performance. Yet discovering and qualifying new materials for semiconductor manufacturing can take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, leaving many promising materials stuck between laboratory research and commercial fabrication.
Autoresearch for the Lab.
AI agents can compress months of interdisciplinary scientific work into days. During its three-month Y Combinator batch, the company simulated, synthesized, and tested thermal interface materials that matched the performance of products developed and protected as trade secrets by major chemical companies for more than two decades.
The company is also releasing Material Discovery Bench, an open-source benchmark for AI-driven materials discovery. Developed with experts from IBM, IMEC, Stanford and Cambridge, the benchmark evaluates frontier models on real-world materials challenges using multiple verification methods across simulation and experimental settings.

Advances in computing have driven much of the technological progress of the past 50 years, but the pace of improvement began to slow in the mid-2010s. The company aims to accelerate the next wave of progress by using AI to speed up materials discovery.
The potential gains are substantial. Modern chips remain far less energy-efficient than the human brain, leaving significant room for improvement.
