Besxar Completes Inaugural Flight with SpaceX, Advancing Path to Semiconductor Manufacturing in Space

Besxar, the exoindustrial company manufacturing advanced semiconductor materials, led by Ashley Pilipiszyn, has reported the results of Besxar Flight-1 “Mission Asimov.” On July 5, 2026, two Besxar-built “Clipper-class” canisters flew aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 first-stage booster and were recovered intact after the booster returned to land.


The mission marked Besxar’s first flight carrying custom wafer cartridges, power, avionics and printed-circuit hardware designed and built in-house, all of which qualified on the first attempt.


The payload included Besxar’s GaN-on-sapphire, undoped silicon and bare sapphire wafers, along with gallium arsenide (GaAs) and aluminum indium arsenide antimonide (AlInAsSb) samples from research partners at the University of Virginia and the University of Texas at Austin.


Flight Outcomes.


Besxar’s primary Flight-1 objective was to test whether its canisters could maintain a clean vacuum environment through flight, re-entry, and recovery while preventing contamination. Post-flight testing indicates the canisters performed as expected.


The canisters also safely carried multiple wafer samples across different compound semiconductor materials. Initial inspections found no cracking, warping or visible damage. Samples from the University of Virginia and the University of Texas at Austin are undergoing independent material-level analysis to assess the effects of vacuum exposure.


Flight-1 also established the foundation for Besxar’s autonomous in-space manufacturing data system. The system successfully collected pressure, acceleration, thermal, vibration, and shock data throughout the mission. One canister performed nominally, while the second experienced an anomaly during flight-data recording; the anomaly review is ongoing ahead of the next flight.

Now we have real data and, more importantly, a team with payload integration, spaceflight, and recovery heritage that will only accelerate our work as we take on the next set of technical milestones on our roadmap.”


Mission Profile.


Besxar’s canisters launched aboard a Falcon 9 first-stage booster from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The company’s Fabships reached approximately 71 miles in altitude, above the internationally recognized edge of space, before the mission concluded about 11 minutes after liftoff.


What’s Next.


Flight-1 was the first of 12 contracted missions under Besxar’s launch agreement with SpaceX. The success of Mission Asimov clears the way for the next technical milestones in in-space compound semiconductor manufacturing, with Besxar now applying lessons from Flight-1 toward Flight-2.


The mission and future flights are financed by Besxar’s early investors. Ahead of Flight-1, the company raised a $10.3 million seed round led by Dauntless Ventures, alongside Overture VC, Keymaker VC, 645 Ventures, Singh Capital Partners, Koru Capital, Plum Alley Ventures, Mana Ventures and Earthrise VC, bringing total funding to $14.7 million.
