Aavuus Secures Pre-Seed Funding from Maki.vc to Bring a New Generation of Space Debris Tracking to Market

Aavuus, a Finnish deep-tech company building infrastructure for a new era of orbital safety, led by Joonas Jokela, Jouni Peltoniemi, and Brian Dunne, has secured a pre-seed investment from Maki.vc.

Improving Space Traffic Awareness.

Aavuus is building a global network of ground-based laser tracking stations designed to provide significantly more precise orbital data than today's commercial tracking systems.

The company is targeting a growing challenge in Low Earth Orbit: the increasing number of satellites and debris objects that make safe operations more difficult. While large objects are routinely tracked, debris between 1 and 10 centimeters remains a major blind spot, small enough to evade consistent monitoring but large enough to destroy a satellite on impact.

By delivering faster and more accurate tracking data, Aavuus aims to improve space situational awareness and collision avoidance capabilities, helping satellite operators navigate an increasingly crowded orbital environment.

Built On Deep Expertise In Space Tracking.

Aavuus is a spinout from the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, bringing specialized expertise in satellite laser ranging and space geodesy to the challenge of tracking objects in orbit.

The company has also strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Brian Dunne, a former U.S. Army aerospace defense officer. His experience in aerospace threat detection and defense operations is expected to help Aavuus expand its presence in the growing defense and national security market for space situational awareness technologies.

Moving From Development To Deployment.

Joonas Jokela said the funding will allow Aavuus to move beyond development and focus on building its minimum viable product, validating performance, and working directly with customers that require more accurate orbital debris tracking data.

Wilson Tukiainen noted that satellite deployments are growing faster than existing tracking systems can handle, creating an increasingly significant gap in space situational awareness. He believes Aavuus' expertise in laser ranging and space geodesy positions the company to build critical infrastructure that future orbital safety will depend on.

Building The First Commercial Solution.

With its pre-seed round complete, Aavuus is now focused on developing its first MVP and delivering it to early customers.

The company's goal is to provide commercial tracking capabilities for debris objects in a size range that has historically been difficult to detect and monitor, helping close a critical gap in space situational awareness as orbital congestion continues to increase.
