TerraSpark, powering Earth from space, led by Jasper Deprez, Dr. Sanjay Vijendran, Matthias Laug, and the team, has completed its pre-seed financing round, raising over five million euros from Daphni, Sake Bosch, angel investor alliance better ventures, the Hans(wo)men Group, and other strategic business angels. The financing will be used to further develop the technology and prepare for initial pilot applications and live tests.

Europe’s Energy Challenge

Europe’s power grids are strained, highlighted by the 2025 outages in Spain and Portugal. Rising demand from data centres, including AI workloads, adds pressure.

Data centre energy use is expected to double by 2030, and high off-grid electricity costs (€0.70–€1.50/kWh) make alternatives attractive. Long-term solutions must improve both clean energy generation and transmission.

The Solution: Solar Energy from Orbit

Space-based solar energy offers constant, weather-independent power accessible globally. While the concept dates back to the 1970s, falling launch costs and advances in satellite manufacturing and orbital robotics now make it economically feasible.

TerraSpark is starting on Earth, commercializing radio frequency-based wireless energy transmission for industrial applications to demonstrate safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance before scaling into orbit.

“The physics behind RF-based energy transfer has been validated for decades,” says Sanjay Vijendran, founder and CTO of TerraSpark and former ESA space solar program manager. “The current challenge is engineering systems that scale safely and reliably, our core focus.”

Leadership Driving TerraSpark

TerraSpark is led by a founding trio with deep expertise in space technology, systems development, and scaling:

CEO Jasper Deprez – Serial entrepreneur, built Tradler into a global HR tech platform serving corporations like Amazon and ABB

CTO Dr. Sanjay Vijendran – Led ESA’s Solaris program on space-based solar energy and contributed to the Mars Sample Return Mission

COO Matthias Laug – Co-founder of Lieferando and Tier Mobility, experienced in scaling major European platform companies

“Space-based solar power has long been seen as futuristic,” says Deprez. “Energy resilience is now a practical concern. By starting with commercially viable systems on Earth, space-based solar power can become real infrastructure within a realistic timeframe.”

Strong Investors Backing a Bold Vision

TerraSpark’s recent financing round was led by Daphni, Sake Bosch, the Better Ventures investor alliance, the Hans(wo)men Group, the Luxembourg Business Angel Network, and Karaoke Club.

“TerraSpark has assembled a team that is hard to ignore,” says Sofia Dahoune. “Their combination of deep technical expertise and proven implementation skills gives Europe its best chance yet to make space-based solar power a reality.”

Sake Bosch adds: “TerraSpark’s step-by-step approach transforms a visionary concept into actionable infrastructure. Europe has the industrial capabilities to lead this change, and TerraSpark is positioned to make it happen.”

Tina Dreimann notes: “Combining European space expertise with the experience to scale technology, TerraSpark delivers the technical depth and execution power Europe needs for resilient energy infrastructure.”

In the coming months, TerraSpark will launch pilot applications, including wireless power for live events, with an orbital demonstrator planned for 2027 and the first space-to-Earth power transmission targeted for 2028.
